Interrobang

INTERROBANG™ - TERMS OF USE

Version 1.0 — Effective 1 November 2026

These Terms govern the Interrobang desktop application, the optional Interrobang online services, and related services operated by the provider identified below. Please read them before downloading, installing or using Interrobang. The plain-language summary at the end is helpful but is not part of the contract; the numbered Terms control.

1. Operator and scope

1.1 Interrobang is operated by Interrobang work, a Dutch sole proprietorship (eenmanszaak) registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce under number 42153619 ("Interrobang", "we", "us" or "our"). Correspondence address: Mare 56, 2642 KB Pijnacker, the Netherlands. VAT identification number (btw-id): NL005540000B13. General, privacy, security and legal contact: [email protected].

1.2 Website: https://interrobang.work. General, privacy, security and legal contact: [email protected]. This email address also serves as Interrobang’s electronic point of contact for communications under the Digital Services Act from service recipients, the European Commission, Member State authorities and the European Board for Digital Services. Communications are accepted in English and Dutch. Illegal-content and rights notices may be submitted as provided in §13.1.

1.3 ‘Desktop Software’ means the downloadable Interrobang writing application. ‘Online Services’ means optional web-connected features operated by Interrobang, including Alpha, Beta, Omega and Plotbox, with its Plotmail functions, described in Section 9. Together they are the ‘Services’.
Interrobang is a free, proprietary, offline-first writing tool with optional private online functions; it is not intended as a public publishing platform. No Interrobang account or subscription is required. Donations are voluntary, do not purchase additional service rights and are not payment for the Services unless Interrobang expressly states otherwise.

1.4 Interrobang is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by or operated by Archive of Our Own (AO3), the Organization for Transformative Works (OTW), Discord, Microsoft, Cloudflare or any other third-party service merely referenced by or used alongside the Services.

2. Agreement and contract formation

2.1 Discord download access

Access to an official download channel may require joining the Interrobang Discord server and complying with the applicable Community Rules and download-access requirements. Discord membership, a Discord reaction, acceptance of the Community Rules or access to a download channel does not by itself constitute acceptance of these Terms.

2.2 Availability of the Terms

Before download and before acceptance, Interrobang will identify the applicable Terms version and effective date and make the Terms available through https://interrobang.work/terms in a form that users can read, download, store and reproduce. Current and archived versions will remain available through that location.

Interrobang will provide any additional summary, transparency information or publication format required by applicable law.

2.3 Acceptance before first use

Before first use, the Desktop Software displays or links to the applicable Terms and requires an affirmative “I Agree” action. The online interface also requires explicit acceptance before loading shared content. If you do not agree, exit the application or leave the online interface. Privacy choices are separate from accepting the Terms.

2.4 Privacy choices and acceptance records

Acceptance of the applicable Terms is recorded locally on your device or browser using the applicable Terms version or document identifier and the date and time of acceptance. Interrobang does not retain a separate server-side Terms-acceptance receipt. Clearing the local record may cause the Terms to be presented again.

When you use an Online Service, Interrobang processes the network, authorisation and security information necessary to provide and protect that service, as described in the Privacy Policy. That information is not retained as a separate Terms-acceptance record.

The Privacy Policy explains how personal data is processed and is not a request for blanket consent. Consent for optional telemetry, diagnostics, non-essential cookies or similar processing will be requested separately and will not be bundled with acceptance of these Terms.

2.5 Conduct that is not acceptance

Merely visiting interrobang.work, joining the Discord server, viewing or accessing a download channel, receiving a Discord message or downloading the installation file does not constitute acceptance of these Terms. Acceptance occurs only through the affirmative action in the Desktop Software or Online Service described in §2.3.

2.6 Age and eligibility

You must meet Discord’s applicable minimum age to use Discord. You must be at least 16 years old to use the Online Services. The Desktop Software may be used locally by a person under 16 where it was lawfully obtained and any parental or guardian permission required by applicable law has been provided. No parental-authorisation process for under-16 online use is offered.

2.7 If you accept for an organisation, you confirm that you are authorised to bind it. Consumer protections continue to apply where you are legally a consumer, even if you also write professionally in another context.

3. Definitions

3.1 ‘Local Project’ means a project whose manuscript content is stored only on a device or storage location under the user’s control and has not been intentionally sent to an Online Service.

3.2 “Project Owner” means the user who creates a project or controls its access permissions through an Online Service. This term describes a product-access role only and does not determine authorship, copyright ownership, or controller or processor status under data-protection law.

3.3 ‘Authorised Recipient’ means a person to whom the Project Owner grants access through an Online Service.

3.4 ‘User Content’ means manuscripts, chapters, drafts, notes, comments, suggestions, edits, project metadata, character/location/worldbuilding sheets, images or image references and other content a user creates, imports, stores or intentionally submits through the Services. It excludes Interrobang software, branding, documentation and operational service data generated by Interrobang.

3.5 “Business User” means a user acting for purposes relating to that user’s trade, business, craft or profession and not as a consumer under applicable law.

3.6 “Project” means a writing project created, imported, stored, managed, accessed, edited or shared using the Services, including its manuscripts, notes, comments, suggestions, edits, metadata and associated materials. A Project may be a Local Project or may include content submitted to an Online Service. The term describes the relevant collection of materials and service functionality only and does not determine authorship, copyright ownership, or controller or processor status under data-protection law.

4. Licence to use the Desktop Software

4.1 Subject to these Terms, Interrobang grants you a non-exclusive, non-transferable, worldwide, royalty-free licence to install and use the official Desktop Software on devices you own or control for personal or professional writing. The licence to a downloaded version continues unless ended under Section 23.

4.2 You may make copies reasonably necessary for installation and lawful use, including a necessary backup copy. Nothing in these Terms restricts rights that mandatory software law gives a lawful acquirer, including rights to observe, study or test the program and, where the legal conditions are met, obtain interoperability information.

4.3 Except as allowed by mandatory law or an applicable open-source licence, you must not sell, sublicense or redistribute the proprietary Desktop Software; circumvent technical protection measures; remove ownership notices; or copy, modify, adapt, decompile, disassemble or reverse engineer it. You must not present a modified or unofficial version, service or download as an official Interrobang release.

4.4 Except as allowed by mandatory law, an applicable open-source licence or Interrobang’s prior written permission, you must not upload, submit or otherwise provide the Desktop Software, its executable files, extracted code, interface assets or documentation to an artificial-intelligence or machine-learning system for the purpose of decompiling, disassembling or reverse engineering it; reconstructing or generating its source code; training or fine-tuning a model; creating a dataset; or developing a substitute or competing product. This restriction applies only to Interrobang materials and does not restrict User Content merely because it was created or edited using Interrobang.

4.5 The licence does not transfer ownership of the Desktop Software or Interrobang branding to you. Third-party and open-source components remain governed by their own licences and notices.

5. Local Projects and device connections

5.1 Manuscript content kept solely in a Local Project is not sent to Interrobang unless you instruct the Desktop Software to use an Online Service or you deliberately provide the material to support or another external destination.

5.2 When you open Synonyms, you can choose whether to use the external Datamuse lookup. External lookup sends the selected or typed query and may include the immediately preceding and following words; further searches run as the search field changes while enabled. Local alternatives remain available without that lookup. If you previously enabled an online link, automatic synchronisation, presence or Plotbox inbox checks can continue while the relevant application or interface is open. Optional AO3 lookup/export, Google Docs export and the donation button can contact or open external services. The Privacy Policy describes these connections.

5.3 Because Interrobang does not ordinarily receive manuscript content in Local Projects, it does not inspect or moderate that content. Acceptable-use restrictions directed to the Online Services do not grant Interrobang a right to inspect local manuscripts.

6. Your content and ownership

6.1 Interrobang does not claim ownership or authorship of User Content. Your User Content remains yours, or remains subject to any third-party rights that already apply. Using the Services does not transfer ownership to Interrobang or to an Authorised Recipient.

6.2 Interrobang does not obtain a right to sell, publish or commercially exploit your writing merely because you use the Services.

6.3 You are responsible for having the rights, permissions or other legal basis needed for the way you choose to store, upload, edit or share User Content. This does not require a fanwork creator to claim ownership of underlying characters, settings, marks or other third-party material.

7. Limited permission for Online Services

7.1 When you intentionally submit User Content to an Online Service, you grant Interrobang a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to host, reproduce, transmit, technically transform and display that content only as reasonably necessary to provide the feature you requested, maintain its security and comply with law. This includes making technically necessary copies and making the content available to the Authorised Recipients you select.

7.2 Interrobang may allow vetted processors and infrastructure providers to perform those limited operations on its behalf, subject to applicable data-protection law and contractual restrictions. They do not receive a licence to exploit User Content for their own unrelated purposes.

7.3 This permission lasts while the content is held for the requested Online Service. It ends when the relevant content is deleted or the online period ends, except for temporary residual copies in backups, security records or legal holds handled under the disclosed retention schedule and applicable law.

7.4 The licence is a technical permission, not a transfer of ownership. It does not authorise Interrobang to publish the project to the public or use it outside the stated purposes.

8. Comments, suggestions and edits

8.1 The Project remains under the control of the Project Owner. Access to another user’s project does not give an Authorised Recipient ownership of the project or its contents.

8.2 To the extent that intellectual-property rights subsist in a comment, suggestion or edit you submit, you retain those rights. You grant the Project Owner a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence, for the duration of those rights, to use, reproduce, edit, adapt, combine, publish, communicate and distribute the contribution only as part of, or in connection with, the relevant project.
Once the contribution has been incorporated into the project or used in reasonable reliance on this permission, the licence is irrevocable to the extent permitted by law. The Project Owner may sublicense the contribution only to publishers, distributors, platforms, service providers and other persons reasonably involved in publishing, distributing or otherwise exploiting the project, and may transfer the licence only together with the project or relevant rights in it.

No payment or attribution is required unless separately agreed or required by mandatory law.

8.3 Section 8.2 does not give the contributor rights in the Project Owner’s material, does not transfer ownership of either party’s pre-existing work, and does not waive moral rights that applicable law does not permit a person to waive.

8.4 If the parties intend co-authorship, ownership shares, confidentiality, payment or credit, they should agree those matters separately. Interrobang does not decide whether a contribution is legally sufficient to create co-authorship or another right.

8.5 Before an Authorised Recipient first submits a comment, suggestion or edit, the interface will clearly disclose the permission granted under Section 8.2 and provide access to these Terms. Separate arrangements remain necessary where the parties intend co-authorship, confidentiality, payment, attribution or ownership sharing.

9. Optional online modes and access permissions

9.1 A reference in these Terms to Alpha, Beta, Omega, Plotbox or another Online Service does not mean the feature is available in every release. Only a feature identified as available on the official product-information page and enabled in the applicable software version forms part of the current offering. Experimental or planned descriptions do not promise release. Plotmail means an idea, message or concept created or received through Plotbox; it does not imply conventional email delivery.

9.2 Alpha; Read Everywhere. Alpha may allow a Project Owner to give selected recipients temporary access to read designated content and, where enabled, highlight or comment on it.

9.3 Beta; Edit Everywhere. Beta may allow selected recipients to review, comment on, suggest edits to or directly edit designated content according to the permissions set by the Project Owner.

9.4 Omega; Write Everywhere. Omega may allow a Project Owner to access and edit designated project content through a browser or other online interface. A local chapter or project area may be locked or marked during online editing to reduce conflicting edits; that mechanism is a coordination aid, not a guarantee that conflicts or divergent copies cannot occur.

9.5 Plotbox and Plotmail provide a browser-to-desktop route for ideas, concepts and sent messages. Unless a Plotbox or Omega link specifies a fixed expiry, it remains active until the Project Owner ends it or until an inactivity or retention limit disclosed in the Privacy Policy or applicable feature notice applies.

Collecting Plotmail into a Project does not erase the corresponding online message. Moving a message to Deleted initially marks it for deletion; a further deletion removes the active message record, subject to the recovery, retention and deletion provisions in Section 20 and the Privacy Policy. A Project Owner may end a Plotbox link and request deletion of its online records through the available Desktop Software controls. Save any online-only material you wish to retain before ending a link or requesting deletion.

Before other selected content is transmitted, the interface identifies the relevant content, permissions, access method and available expiry, termination and recovery controls. Exact capabilities may differ by version and remain subject to Sections 19 and 20.

9.6 A private link, token, passphrase or key may function as a credential. Keep it confidential, use a secure channel to send it, verify the intended recipient and revoke access if it may have been exposed. The Project Owner is responsible for choosing recipients and permissions.

9.7 An Authorised Recipient may use another user’s content only for the permission and purpose for which access was granted. A recipient must not bypass permissions, redistribute a private link, disclose private User Content, or continue accessing content after permission is revoked.

9.8 Revocation or expiry blocks ordinary recipient retrieval through the service once enforced, but does not retrieve content already delivered or erase exports, notes, screenshots or browser-local data. Owner-authenticated recovery can remain possible while inactive records await deletion. Share only with people you trust.

9.9 To reduce security and abuse risks, online modes may neutralise links or active markup, omit or replace images, and reject executable or unsupported files. User-supplied manuscript text is treated as data and is not intended to execute as code.

9.10 An Authorised Recipient must keep private User Content confidential, use reasonable care to prevent unauthorised access, and, following revocation or expiry, cease using and delete copies within their reasonable control if requested by the Project Owner, except where continued retention is authorised or legally required. Interrobang cannot guarantee recipient compliance or retrieve copies already made. Users requiring additional confidentiality, credit, payment or editorial obligations should enter a separate written agreement.

10. Encryption, security and keys

10.1 The Security and Encryption Notice identifies the categories of content encrypted before transmission, the applicable key and recovery model, the metadata visible to Interrobang and its processors, and whether a feature qualifies as end-to-end encrypted. Interrobang will use the term “end-to-end encrypted” only for the scope for which the implemented architecture supports that description.

10.2 Encryption may protect content in transit or at rest without making every category of data end-to-end encrypted. Unless the Security Notice expressly says otherwise, operational metadata—such as network addresses, timestamps, content size, device/browser information, share identifiers, recipient-routing information and security logs—may remain visible to Interrobang or its processors.

10.3 Encryption does not protect content once displayed on a compromised or unlocked device, copied by a recipient or accessed with an exposed key or link. Decrypted Alpha/Beta comment caches and Beta editing drafts can persist as plaintext in browser storage. Omega recovery/drafts and Plotbox local concepts use encrypted envelopes; older plaintext entries can remain until migrated or cleared. Keep devices, browser profiles, recovery material and credentials secure.

10.4 If a user-controlled key is the only way to decrypt content, losing that key may make recovery permanently impossible, including for Interrobang. If any recovery mechanism gives Interrobang or another party access, that fact will be disclosed and the feature will not be described more strongly than the architecture permits.

10.5 We apply security measures proportionate to the service and the risks, and assess reported vulnerabilities and incidents. Report issues privately to [email protected]. No system is completely secure. This does not reduce mandatory security, conformity or breach-notification obligations.

10.6 Report suspected vulnerabilities privately to [email protected] under the Responsible Vulnerability Disclosure Policy at https://interrobang.work/security. Good-faith reporting is welcomed; it does not authorise access to another user's data or testing outside the published scope.

11. No AI training on your writing

11.1 Interrobang will not use User Content to train or fine-tune generative-AI models or general-purpose machine-learning models.

11.2 Interrobang will not sell or license User Content to another party for that training purpose, and will not instruct or permit its processors to use User Content for their own model training.

11.3 The limited technical permission in Section 7 does not include model training. Any future optional AI feature would require separate, clear terms and controls before use; it is not authorised by these Terms.

12. Acceptable use

12.1 You must not use the Online Services, official downloads, website or community infrastructure to:

i. distribute malware or malicious code, or upload executable material through a feature not designed to accept it;

ii. gain unauthorised access; bypass permissions or security; exploit a vulnerability outside the published disclosure policy; or disrupt or overload a project, credential, device, network or system;

iii. conduct phishing, fraud, scams, impersonation, credential theft or unauthorised collection of personal data;

iv. use automated systems to scrape, probe, attack or abuse the Services, except as expressly authorised;

v. share content through the Online Services where doing so is manifestly unlawful, infringes another person’s rights, contains unlawful non-consensual intimate material, facilitates sexual abuse or exploitation of children, or makes a credible unlawful threat; or

vi. use Interrobang branding to make an unofficial release, download or service appear official, or help another person carry out any prohibited act.

12.2 Section 12.1 does not give Interrobang a right to inspect Local Projects or make Interrobang the arbiter of lawfulness of private text that it never receives.

12.3 We interpret and enforce this section in context, taking account of legitimate security research, journalism, quotation, fiction and other lawful expression. A fictional depiction is not automatically an instruction or a credible threat.

13. Illegal-content and rights notices

13.1 If you believe that content accessible through an Online Service is unlawful or infringes your rights, you may submit a notice by following the instructions at https://interrobang.work/notices or by emailing [email protected]. The notice mechanism is available electronically in English and Dutch.

Your notice should include: (a) a sufficiently clear and substantiated explanation of why you believe the content is unlawful or infringes your rights; (b) the exact share URL, identifier or other information reasonably necessary to locate the content; (c) your name and email address, unless applicable law permits an anonymous notice; and (d) a statement confirming your good-faith belief that the information and allegations in the notice are accurate and complete.

13.2 If the content is not readable by Interrobang, provide the evidence reasonably needed to assess the notice, such as the relevant text or an image of it. We do not require a reporter to disclose more personal data than is necessary.

13.3 We may ask for clarification, disable a share or restrict access where a notice is sufficiently precise or action is otherwise legally required. Where applicable, we will acknowledge the notice without undue delay, act diligently, and give affected users a clear statement of reasons and available review or redress options, unless law or a legitimate safety/security need prevents that disclosure.

13.4 Interrobang does not undertake a general obligation to monitor User Content. We may use proportionate measures to secure the Services and respond to specific notices, court orders or authority orders.

13.5 Do not knowingly submit false or abusive notices. Good-faith mistakes will not be treated the same as deliberate misuse.

14. Original writing, fanworks and third-party rights

14.1 Interrobang may be used for original writing and fanworks. AO3-oriented metadata or export tools do not imply affiliation with or endorsement by AO3 or OTW.

14.2 Interrobang does not claim rights in third-party characters, worlds, trademarks or other material merely because a project refers to them. A user’s ownership of their own expression does not by itself create ownership of underlying third-party material.

14.3 You are responsible for whether your particular use and sharing complies with applicable law and third-party rights. Interrobang does not decide whether a work falls within an exception or limitation such as quotation, parody, caricature or pastiche, or within a doctrine that may apply in another country.

14.4 Product support for fanfiction is a functional design choice, not legal advice or a representation that every fanwork is lawful.

15. Interrobang intellectual property and feedback

15.1 The proprietary software, original code, branding, logos, interface elements, documentation and other Interrobang materials belong to their respective owner(s), except where third-party or open-source material is identified under its own licence.

15.2 If you voluntarily submit feedback, bug reports or feature suggestions about Interrobang, you grant Interrobang a perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free, transferable and sublicensable licence to use, reproduce, adapt and implement that feedback for any purpose without payment. This recognises that similar ideas may be independently suggested or already under development.

15.3 Section 15.2 does not apply to a manuscript or other creative User Content merely because it accompanies a support request. Only the feedback about Interrobang is covered.

16. Privacy and data protection

16.1 The Privacy Policy at https://interrobang.work/privacy explains Interrobang’s identity and role, data categories, purposes, legal bases, recipients, transfers, retention, security, user rights and complaint routes. The Privacy Policy is a notice; agreeing to these Terms is not consent to processing that separately requires consent.

16.2 The Privacy Policy distinguishes local files from information transmitted through the website, Discord-related flow, Datamuse synonym searches, optional external-service actions, support and Online Services, including automated checks after an online feature has been enabled.

16.3 If you place another person’s personal data in an Online Service, you are responsible for having an appropriate reason and authority to do so and for using permissions proportionately. Do not use the Online Services as a professional repository for regulated, client-confidential or high-risk personal data unless Interrobang expressly supports that use and, where required, has agreed a data processing agreement.

16.4 Submit privacy requests to [email protected]. We may need proportionate information to verify identity and protect User Content from unauthorised disclosure.

17. Third-party services

17.1 Discord, AO3/OTW, Datamuse, Google Docs, Stripe and external image hosts used through optional functions have their own terms and privacy practices. Their actual roles depend on the processing involved. Interrobang remains responsible where applicable law makes it responsible for a provider acting on its behalf.

17.2 An export, link or compatibility feature may stop working if a third party changes its service, requirements or interface. Where mandatory law applies, this does not remove Interrobang’s duties concerning promised functionality, compatibility, interoperability or updates.

17.3 Cloud, delivery or security providers selected by Interrobang may act on our behalf. Calling them ‘third parties’ does not remove Interrobang’s responsibility where applicable law makes us responsible for a processor, subcontractor or service component.

17.4 Interrobang is not a general public image-hosting service. Online modes may use placeholders or omit images, and may neutralise links. Externally hosted material remains subject to the external provider’s availability and security.

17.5 Interrobang may restrict availability by country, territory or recipient where reasonably necessary to comply with applicable export-control or sanctions law. You must not export, re-export or make the Desktop Software or its encryption functionality available in violation of such law.

18. Backups, exports and data-loss risk

18.1 Maintain at least one tested, independent backup of important or irreplaceable work and periodically verify that projects and exports can be opened. Do not treat the Desktop Software, an online share, synchronisation, snapshots or recovery features as the only copy.

18.2 Hardware failure, software defects, corrupted files, user error, operating-system changes, service interruption, conflicting edits, exposed credentials or failed synchronisation may damage or make content unavailable. Locks and snapshots can reduce risk but cannot eliminate it.

18.3 We will exercise the care and provide the remedies required by mandatory law. Your backup responsibility does not exclude liability or consumer remedies that cannot lawfully be excluded.

19. Availability, updates and service modifications

19.1 Current functionality, compatibility, interoperability, supported operating systems and browsers, known material constraints, export formats and supported versions will be described at https://interrobang.work.

19.2 We may provide updates to maintain conformity, fix defects, address security, preserve compatibility or add features. We will identify any update that is necessary to keep a consumer service in conformity and provide it for the period required by applicable law. Supported-version and minimum security-update information will be published at the URL in Section 19.1.

19.3 Install security and required compatibility updates within a reasonable time after we inform you of their availability and consequences. We are not responsible for a lack of conformity caused solely by failure to install a properly supplied update where we gave adequate installation instructions and warning, to the extent applicable law permits.

19.4 We may modify an Online Service for a valid reason, including legal or security requirements; preventing abuse; maintaining or improving performance, accessibility or functionality; adapting to technical environments, user numbers or third-party dependencies; or replacing an unsupported component. A modification will not impose an additional charge unless you separately agree to a paid offering.

19.5 We will give clear information about a modification. Where a change has more than a minor negative effect on access to or use of a consumer digital service, we will provide advance notice on a durable medium, ordinarily at least 30 days beforehand, and any right to terminate or retain access to an unmodified version required by law. Urgent legal or security changes may require shorter notice where permitted.

19.6 A feature clearly labelled preview, test or experimental may be less stable and may change more frequently, but the label does not remove mandatory conformity, security or consumer rights.

20. Suspension, discontinuation, export and deletion

20.1 Interrobang may restrict an Online Service or disable a share where reasonably necessary to protect users or infrastructure, respond to a security incident or sufficiently precise legal notice, comply with applicable law, or address a serious or repeated breach of these Terms. Any measure taken will be proportionate to the circumstances.

20.2 Where practical and lawful, Interrobang will inform the affected user of the action taken, its principal reasons, its anticipated duration and any available review or redress route. Information may be withheld where disclosure would create a security risk, prejudice an investigation or be prohibited by law.

20.3 Before a planned discontinuation or non-urgent termination affecting online User Content, Interrobang will provide reasonable advance notice and an opportunity to retrieve the affected content where technically and legally possible. Personal data will be handled in accordance with the Privacy Policy and applicable data-protection law. Where mandatory consumer law applies, user-provided non-personal content will be made available free of charge, without hindrance, within a reasonable time and in a commonly used, machine-readable format, subject to applicable statutory exceptions.

20.4 Expiry or revocation ends ordinary recipient access once enforced. Interrobang schedules the associated active-service records for deletion 24 hours after expiry or revocation, subject to short operational execution delays. Owner-authenticated recovery may remain available during that interval.

The 24-hour deletion process applies only to active-service records. It does not erase copies already obtained by recipients and does not govern provider backup or recovery copies, security logs, documented legal holds, or information independently retained in a browser or device. Those records follow the Privacy Policy and the applicable feature notice.

Where Chapter VI of Regulation (EU) 2023/2854 applies, a formal switching or exit request made by the Project Owner before ordinary deletion is completed suspends routine deletion of the relevant exportable data for the applicable switching and retrieval periods, as described in the Data Portability and Switching Schedule. This does not automatically extend every expired link or restore data already deleted.

A link without a fixed expiry remains active until the Project Owner ends it or until a disclosed inactivity or retention limit applies. Interrobang will not describe active-service content as deleted until the applicable deletion process has completed.

20.5 Leaving or being removed from Discord does not by itself terminate the licence to a lawfully downloaded version of the Desktop Software or transfer ownership of User Content. Access to Discord-hosted support, update or download channels may nevertheless end under the Community Rules and Discord’s applicable terms and policies.

20.6 Data portability and switching. For an Online Service falling within Chapter VI of Regulation (EU) 2023/2854, a customer may request the export of applicable exportable data and digital assets to a local environment or, where technically possible, another provider, or may request their deletion, in accordance with the Data Portability and Switching Schedule available at https://interrobang.work/data-switching. The Schedule describes the available request methods, export categories and formats, excluded internal data, applicable time periods, assistance, continuity measures, deletion procedures and known technical limitations. Interrobang does not impose a charge for export or switching under the Schedule.

21. Statutory rights and warranties

21.1 Nothing in these Terms excludes, limits or replaces statutory rights, conformity requirements, security-update rights or remedies that cannot lawfully be excluded, including rights that may apply when a digital service is supplied in exchange for personal data rather than money.

21.2 Interrobang will provide the Services with the professional diligence and security required by applicable law and in material conformity with the information we make part of the contract.

21.3 Subject to Sections 21.1 and 21.2, the Services are provided free of charge and as available. We do not give an additional guarantee that every feature will be uninterrupted, entirely error-free, compatible with every system or suitable for a purpose that was not agreed or reasonably made known to us.

22. Liability

22.1 Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability for fraud; death or personal injury where exclusion is prohibited; intentional conduct or deliberate recklessness attributable to Interrobang’s management; mandatory product liability; liability under applicable data-protection law; or any other liability, right or remedy that cannot legally be excluded or limited.

22.2 If you are a consumer, Interrobang is liable to the extent required by mandatory law. Any exclusion or limitation in these Terms applies only to the extent lawful. You should take reasonable steps to avoid or reduce loss, including maintaining backups, but a failure to do so does not remove rights that mandatory law gives you.

22.3 Subject to §22.1, Interrobang’s aggregate liability to a Business User arising out of or in connection with the Services will not exceed, for all claims arising in any 12-month period, the greater of: (a) EUR 500; and (b) any fees paid by that Business User specifically for the affected Service during that period. Voluntary donations are not fees for a Service and do not increase this cap.

22.4 Interrobang is not responsible for an Authorised Recipient’s independent misuse of content after legitimately receiving access, or for an external service chosen directly by the user. This does not exclude responsibility for Interrobang’s own access controls or for providers for whom Interrobang is legally responsible.

23. Ending use and termination

23.1 You may stop using Interrobang at any time. Uninstalling the Desktop Software does not automatically delete Local Projects, exports or backups elsewhere on your device.

23.2 You may end an Online Service through its available controls. Expiry, export, retrieval and deletion follow Section 20, the applicable feature disclosure and the Privacy Policy.

23.3 Interrobang may terminate access to an Online Service for a material breach of these Terms, ordinarily after giving notice and a reasonable opportunity to remedy a curable breach. Immediate action may be taken for urgent security, legal or user-safety reasons. The desktop licence may be terminated only for a material breach of the licence or intellectual-property restrictions, subject to mandatory law.

23.4 Ending use or access does not transfer ownership of User Content. Sections concerning ownership, contributor permissions, intellectual property, liability, disputes and provisions that by their nature must survive will continue to apply.

23.5 Where the Desktop Software is necessary to open User Content stored in a proprietary local project format, Interrobang will, where technically and legally possible, provide a reasonable read-only or export path before terminating the desktop licence or discontinuing the relevant functionality. This does not apply where continued operation would create an urgent security risk or violate applicable law.

24. Changes to these Terms

24.1 Each Terms version will have a version number and effective date. We will archive prior versions so users can identify the contract that applied.

24.2 We may update these Terms for legal, security, technical or product reasons. We will explain material changes and, where required by applicable law, provide reasonable advance notice in a durable medium that enables the user to store and reproduce the notice unchanged, such as email or a downloadable in-application notice. A website posting may supplement, but will not replace, durable-medium notice where such notice is legally required.

24.3 A material change will apply to an existing user only after any notice or acceptance required by applicable law. Where appropriate, the application or Online Service will request affirmative acceptance of the updated Terms. Silence, a Discord reaction or mere continued access will not replace explicit agreement where explicit agreement is required.
If you decline updated Terms, Interrobang may restrict access to an affected Online Service, but refusal alone will not unnecessarily prevent you from accessing or exporting User Content stored in a Local Project. Where technically and legally possible, the read-only or export protections in §23.5 will apply.

24.4 A new Terms version does not retrospectively change ownership of User Content. Continued use of an older local desktop version remains subject to the version accepted for it, except to the extent a lawful update is required for security, compatibility or continued Online Service access and the applicable change process is followed.

25. Governing law and disputes

25.1 These Terms and the contractual relationship are governed by Dutch law.

25.2 If you are a consumer, this choice does not deprive you of mandatory protections of the law of your country of habitual residence that would apply without the choice. You may bring proceedings in any court available to you under mandatory consumer-jurisdiction rules. Interrobang will bring proceedings against a consumer only in a court permitted by those rules.

25.3 If you are not a consumer, the courts of Rotterdam, the Netherlands have exclusive jurisdiction, unless mandatory law provides otherwise.

25.4 Before starting formal proceedings, either party may ask the other to try to resolve the issue through the contact in Section 1. This does not suspend a limitation period or restrict urgent relief or a consumer’s right to contact a regulator or court.

26. General terms

26.1 These Terms, the Data Portability and Switching Schedule for covered Online Services, and any separately accepted product-specific terms form the agreement for the Services. The Privacy Policy provides information about the processing of personal data and is not incorporated as a source of additional contractual permission to process that data. If the Data Portability and Switching Schedule or any product-specific terms conflict with these Terms, the more specific provision controls the matter it addresses, subject to mandatory law.

26.2 If a provision is invalid or unenforceable, it will be applied to the maximum lawful extent and the remaining provisions remain effective. For consumers, it will not be replaced in a way that deprives them of mandatory rights.

26.3 A delay or failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver of the right to enforce it later.

26.4 You may not transfer this agreement except where mandatory law permits. Interrobang may transfer it as part of a genuine reorganisation or transfer of the Services, provided this does not reduce consumer rights and users receive notice where required.

26.5 The governing version is English. Any translation is provided for convenience unless mandatory law requires otherwise; unclear consumer wording will be interpreted under applicable law.

26.6 Questions about these Terms may be sent to [email protected] or the operator details in Section 1.

PLAIN-ENGLISH SUMMARY — ARTICLE BY ARTICLE

For readers: these explanations follow the articles in the document above, in the same order. They explain the document in everyday language; they do not replace or change the legal text. The numbered provisions govern.

1. Operator and scope

Explains who operates Interrobang, what the desktop and optional online services include, and which third-party organisations are independent of Interrobang.

2. Agreement and contract formation

Explains how users obtain and accept the Terms. Joining Discord or downloading the installer is not acceptance; acceptance uses an explicit action in the app or online interface. Privacy choices are separate.

3. Definitions

Explains the meanings of terms such as Local Project, Project Owner, Authorised Recipient and User Content, so later articles are easier to interpret.

4. Licence to use the Desktop Software

You may use the official software for personal or professional writing without paying a licence fee. You do not own the software or have a general right to redistribute or reverse-engineer it. Certain rights granted by law and third-party licences still apply.

5. Local Projects and device connections

Writing stays in your local project unless an external function sends it. You can choose external synonym lookup, which sends queried text and sometimes neighbouring words to Datamuse. Previously enabled sharing and Plotbox can check for updates automatically.

6. Your content and ownership

Interrobang does not become the owner of your writing. You remain responsible for any rights or permissions needed for content you upload or share, including third-party material used in fanworks.

7. Limited permission for Online Services

When you choose to share material online, you give Interrobang only the limited permission needed to operate that feature. The permission is not a general right to publish or sell your writing.

8. Comments, suggestions and edits

Readers and collaborators can contribute comments or edits where permitted. The article explains the status of those contributions and how the project owner may manage them.

9. Optional online modes and access permissions

Alpha, Beta, Omega and Plotbox are optional online functions. Protect links and keys. Plotbox and Omega links can remain active without automatic expiry; ending a link is separate from copying mail into a project.

10. Encryption, security and keys

The Security and Encryption Notice explains which content is encrypted, what metadata remains visible, and how keys and recovery operate. Protect private links, keys, recovery material and devices.

11. No AI training on your writing

Interrobang promises not to use your submitted writing to train or fine-tune AI models. This commitment does not automatically control what unrelated third parties do with copies obtained elsewhere.

12. Acceptable use

You must not misuse the online services or infrastructure for harmful, fraudulent, unlawful or unauthorised activities, including attacks and scraping.

13. Illegal-content and rights notices

Explains how to report suspected unlawful content or rights violations, how notices are handled and why deliberately false or abusive reports are prohibited.

14. Original writing, fanworks and third-party rights

Interrobang supports original fiction and fanworks as writing formats, but using the software does not make every fanwork lawful or remove other people’s intellectual-property rights.

15. Interrobang intellectual property and feedback

Interrobang keeps its rights in the software and branding. The article explains how suggestions and feedback about the product may be used.

16. Privacy and data protection

Personal information is handled under the separate Privacy Policy, which describes processing and users’ data-protection rights.

17. Third-party services

External services such as Discord or payment providers have their own rules and privacy practices. Interrobang does not control every action of those providers.

18. Backups, exports and data-loss risk

You should keep your own copies of important writing. The article explains the role of exports, backups and the possibility of data loss.

19. Availability, updates and service modifications

The software and online features may receive updates or change. The article explains what users can expect if a feature is modified, interrupted or discontinued.

20. Suspension, discontinuation, export and deletion

Expiry or revocation ends ordinary recipient access. Associated active-service records are scheduled for deletion 24 hours later, although short operational delays may occur and owner-authenticated recovery may remain available during that interval. Provider backups and recovery copies, security logs, legal holds and independently retained recipient or browser copies follow separate rules. A link without a fixed expiry remains active until the Project Owner ends it or a disclosed inactivity or retention limit applies. A timely formal switching request preserves relevant data for the separate switching and retrieval periods where the switching rules apply.

21. Statutory rights and warranties

The Terms do not remove consumer rights that the law makes mandatory. This article explains the limits of warranties and the rights users retain.

22. Liability

Explains when Interrobang may or may not be responsible for loss or damage, subject to legal limits and mandatory consumer protections.

23. Ending use and termination

Explains how use of the software or services can end, and which obligations may continue afterward.

24. Changes to these Terms

Interrobang may update its Terms. This article explains how changes and effective dates are communicated.

25. Governing law and disputes

Dutch law governs the Terms, but users may still have mandatory protections under other applicable consumer laws. The article addresses disputes.

26. General terms

Covers standard contract rules, including how separate provisions operate, whether rights are waived and where questions can be sent.
